And thought to themselves "Hmmmmmm, this gameplay is nowhere near frantic enough."? Well, I've got the game for you. It's called !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , and while it's technically still in beta it's fully playable and available for free(-to-play) on Steam.

It's tremendous fun, almost as good as the original Halo online multiplayer.

Good god, I played Mechwarrior 2, 3, and 4. I've never played any other game as much as I played Mechwarrior 4. That game was the god damn best. Most people seem to have forgotten about it, though, which is really sad. I'm amazed anyone on Oppo even remembers it besides myself. I know there's a FTP modern version out there but it seemed really steeply baked in "lets make you pay money" when I tried it out.

I really need to get around to trying out Hawken.

Bring it. I main a vanguard and an assault as well as a sharpshooter and a tech for backup and I'm not bad as a brawler for tanking. Search me out - themanwithsauce on steam.

I've heard of this game. Mechwarrior Online proved to be terribad so i have hope.

I played MW4: Mercs very extensively, in fact I still have the disc somewhere. Problem is, it doesn't really hold up well today.

Nothing feels better than reaching over, mashing insert/home/pgup/pgdn/insert/end, and just firing off EVERYTHING you have.

Hawken is great. The mech types aren't really balanced though.

See after trying to get into MWO and gtting frustrated with their total disdain for the player base, I went back and started playing MW4:Mercs again. I'm trying to speedrun Solaris VII and fine tune my mech loadouts for it. So far it's just "Autocannon Shotgun everything that looks at me funny" and it seems to work pretty well.

I found a way to pack a Thanatos with enough guns to take on assault mechs - clan LB-X 20, Clan light gauss, medium laser, 2 small lasers, Clan streak 6, and Clan LRM 5. Forget the jump jets, AMS, and all remaining weight points to armor and heat sinks.

Aside from the graphics, I'd say the gameplay holds up just fine. There really isn't anything like it today other than Mechwarrior Online. I still have all of my game discs too.

I always found the LRM 5's to be a waste of space since half the mechs had AMS/LAMS that would just shoot the thing out of the air. Small lasers also seemed like a waste as well, unless you had no use for their .5 tons each.

Nah, way better - Loki w/ twin LBX20 clans. Speed up to about 90-95kph. Rest in armor, focus on the arms and torso. Tears up heavy class and I like it more for the arena/grand championship due to the speed being twice that of my triple LBX-20 Daishi. But the Daishi never dies and that triple shot has one hit killed heavies and I think an assault or two. Loki has OHK'd mediums regularly when my aim is good.

Basically my mechs for arena are

light - Puma w/ twin clan LBX10

medium - bushwacker w/ clan lbx10 and clan lbx20

heavy - Loki w/ twin clan LBX20s

assault - Daishi w/ 3 clan LBX20s

Hawken is too fast-paced for me. I like my mechs Western style, big heavy hulking monstrosities that shake the ground and require me to focus more on strategy and tactics than twitch.

Lasers are only really useful in campaign mode so you don't have to waste precious ammo on stuff like tanks and choppers.

Unless you're on one of those cold lunar MP maps. Then everyone loads up on lasers.

I had an old Sunder build I would use to knock the hell out of people. It had something like 6 auto AC-2's, a couple of ER large lasers, and some other gauss or PPC or something. I'd load up on engine speed, ammo, and keep pelting people with the autocannons so they couldn't aim straight, then nail them with the heavy hitters. When I was in my clan, I'd hear from the other members that people hated playing against it. We all had our fun niche builds. Good times.
